Sickness & Distress:

Paul A. Cole, GJW:  I thank everyone for their concerns and prayers - believe me, I know they made a difference and we are extremely grateful for each and every one.  I would like to offer this explanation concerning my recent trip to the hospital. After going down to the Ohio River (near Vevay, Indiana) to celebrate my Grand-Daughter Emily's graduation from High School and to be with the family for the Memorial Day weekend - evidently I contracted a very strong virus ... When I returned home on Sunday evening I had full plans to attend the Masonic Memorial Service on Monday morning at Messick Temple in Shelbyville - However - at 6:00AM on Monday morning I was very ill and laid back down to rest ... I should have gone to the doctor 'right away' but did not.  Margaret was returning to Olathe, Kansas with our oldest daughter Paula to spend a few days with her family.  I became dehydrated and lapsed into a faint ... When my Grandson Andrew came to check on me - I was not responsive and he immediately called 911 ... I was taken to Major Hospital and then to St. Vincent’s (not St. Francis) - where I underwent extensive tests to include MRI and CAT Scans - after all the testing, the doctor's concluded that I had contracted a very strong virus - and it had to run its course.  I was released from St. Vincent's Hospital on Tuesday, June 5th 2007. Yours - In Christian Masonry and Templary, Paul Cole, GSW

Leon Langner, Editor of the Knight Templar Indiana supplement in 2006-07 is suffering from a second round of cancer.  He was awarded the Secretary of the Year at the Annual Assembly of the Grand Lodge of Indiana in May 2007. Please remember Lee in your prayers.

Doris Bitting: Doris went back into the hospital on 5/24/07. She was having difficulty breathing.  She has congestive heart failure and they have drained a half gallon of water off her body.  The water was causing the shortness of breath.  Irv said she will be there for a few days and will keep us updated. Doris Bitting came home from the hospital on Saturday and is doing well.

Rudell Sarge Wilburn: Sarge had back surgery and is doing well, but cannot ride for more that 20 minutes or so.

Marion Crum: Be advised that Marion Crum, a member of our Indiana College, is undergoing open hear surgery at Columbus Regional Hospital today, June 15. I will forward additional information as I receive it. Cards and well wishes can be sent to Marion's home at the Indiana Masonic Home. Mr. Marion Crum, 446 Archway Drive, Franklin, IN 46131

My husband and I visited with Marion and Iris for a short time this afternoon.  Marion is still pretty medicated so tended to drift in and out of consciousness.  There were no noticeable tubes connected to him and he had really good color in his face.  He thought he might get released tomorrow but he has not been up walking around yet, so my guess is he will be there at least until Tuesday. He was concerned that he doesn't have access to either his cell phone or his laptop to conduct any business.  I told him he needs to concentrate on getting well, because all of you and me working together can "hold down the fort" until he is again able to do so.
Has been released to the Transitional Care Unit at the IMH for rehab, he is unable to drive for a month, but should be fully recovered within three months. Respectfully yours, Leah Jackson, Secretary, Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation

UPDATE ON LEVANT PRECEPTORY

Our second meeting tonight was well-attended. Several of the members arrived with their new Templar kits in hand. SK Robert Coleman inspected all of the gear and everything received a thumbs-up from the armorer.

At the request of our Right Eminent Grand Commander, Andy Jackson, we will be conferring the Order of the Temple on Saturday, August 25 at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin in an outdoor setting. The time has yet to be determined. We have a lot to do between now and then and the wheels are all in motion.

I will be contacting EGC Andy Jackson to make certain that all necessary dispensations and permissions are taken care of well in advance. I have held previous discussions with Andy regarding this and anticipate no problems.

SK Coleman has tents available for our use including one that will suffice for the hermits' hut. We will be making several pieces of furniture including chairs for the principal officers, a triangular table, and an altar. SK Dale Adams, who has a complete woodshop at his residence, has graciously offered to make everything we need. We will be asking some of the local Commanderies to loan us some of the other items we'll need to properly confer the order.

We discussed dues and have decided to defer that decision to a later date when we will know what our expenses for the wood needed for the furniture and other necessary items will be.

The possibility exists that a group from SCA, (Society for Creative Anachronism) will prepare a Templar feast and provide period music after the order is conferred. This hinges on whether we can secure a kitchen facility at the Masonic Home. SK Rex Sohn will be investigating this.

Rebecca Coleman will be making the Templar surcoats. Please do not purchase one of your own. We can make them at considerably less cost than you can purchase them online. It also will enable us to be uniform in appearance.

Due to the many conflicts with other Masonic events on weekdays and the necessity for having as many as possible in attendance, we have tentatively scheduled a practice for Sunday, June 24, time and location to be announced. The temperature of the building will preclude us from holding this practice at Raper Commander and I will be trying to secure a location that is air-conditioned. I will be checking with EGC Andy Jackson and ask him to contact the Grand Master to make sure we will not be violating any Masonic regulations by holding this practice on a Sunday. The regulations may prevent us from using a lodge room, but I'm not certain of that at this point. If so, I'll work on finding another location.

You will need your helm, maille coif, sword, belt, and gloves at this rehearsal. You may also want to consider bringing your period shoes. We'll be practicing sword drills, uncovering and recovering, and other maneuvers in the ritual.

What follows is a preliminary cast list. Several of those on this list were at the organizational meeting, but were not in attendance tonight. If your name is on this list and you will not have all of your gear purchased within the next few weeks, please let me know immediately. Also, let me know if you have a conflict with the date or if I have assigned you a part that you aren't or won't be comfortable with.

 Commander- Phil Herthel

Generalissimo- Chris Roscher

Captain General- Paul Cole

Prelate- Jim Dillman

Senior Warden- Dale Adams

Junior Warden- Carson Smith

Warder- Rex Sohn

Standard Bearer- Robert Coleman

Sword Bearer- Terry Turner

Sentinel- Tim Brinkmeyer

Hermits- Gary Messer, Mark Hayworth, Kyle Fahrner

Temple Guards- Chris Head, Chris Hodapp, Ryan Lentz

Prelate's Escort- Robert Coleman, Chris Hodapp, Chris Head, Terry Turner, Alan Martinez, Tim Brinkmeyer

The Baldric- Alan Martinez

The Sword- Terry Turner

The Spur- Tim Brinkmeyer

The Banners- Robert Coleman

The Flag- Chris Hodapp

If you are not on this list and want to participate, we will have a place for you and would love for you to be there. You can be a part of the Prelate's escort and we will post guards throughout the asylum. It will make our conferral of the order that much more impressive.

I anticipate that, once we do this for the first time, people will be beating the door down for us to confer the order for them. We will switch the parts around and if there is a part that you'd like to perform in the future, please let me know. I'm sure you'll get the opportunity.

I hope you are all as excited about this project as I am. There is a lot of buzz around the state and even outside the state. To the best of my knowledge, we will be the only group in the country conferring the Order of the Temple in authentic period costumes complete with armor.

If you have questions regarding costumes or accessories, please direct them to SK Robert Coleman at rcoleman@indy.rr.com. If you have any other questions, please e-mail me at jrdill1955@yahoo.com or call my cell phone at 317-828-7611.

 Yours in Templary,

Jim Dillman

FOR YOUR READING PLEASURE

From: James Dillman

Sir Knights, as I've mentioned in the few meetings we've held thus far, I'd like for our group to ultimately become more than just an order conferral team. If we're going to call ourselves Templars, I believe it's worthwhile to know something about Templar history, philosophy, and the chivalric aspects of the order. As such, here are a few recommendations for books about the Knights Templar. I know there are several SK's on this mailing list that are very well-read on Templary and can add to this list, as can many of you with a more passing interest who might have read something that others would find interesting or entertaining. Please forward your suggestions along to the entire group if you're so inclined.

Our fellow Sir Knight, Chris Hodapp, has just released his latest book, The Templar Code for Dummies, co-written by Alice Von Kannon, known in some parts as that shy, demure little redhead, Alice Hodapp. Presuming that most of you have read Freemasons for Dummies (and if you haven't, shame on ya), I suspect we'll find this book to likewise be an accurate, well-researched book that is an eminently readable and intelligently-condensed history of the KT's. Congratulations, Chris and Alice. I looked for a copy today at Barnes and Noble in Plainfield and they didn't have it yet. Someone told me they picked up a copy at Borders a couple of days ago.

For those of you interested in a more exhaustive history, Malcolm Barber has been widely acclaimed as the ultimate authority on the Knights Templar. His book A New Knighthood: A History of the Order of the Temple is considered the definitive history on the Templars. Barber has written extensively on the Knight's Templar and medieval history. I'm about a third of the way through the through the book. It is somewhat dry reading, but it's not Morals and Dogma. I'm finding it very interesting and informative. Borders in Greenwood stocks this book.

If history isn't your thing, you might consider Knight Templar 1120-1312, by Helen Nicholson. This book is only sixty-four pages long and is full of pictures, maps, and illustrations. It paints a pretty good picture of the Knight Templar's recruitment, beliefs, daily life, training, battle tactics, uniform and equipment, etc. You can read clear through it in an evening. Nicholson has also become highly-regarded in literary circles and seems to know her stuff. Borders in Greenwood stocks this book as well.

Nicholson has her own history of the Knights Templar simply titled The Knights Templar I haven't read or purchased it yet, so perhaps someone else on the list can comment on it. Many of the reviews on Amazon.com rate it right up there with Barber's.

Yet another offering from Nicholson is God's Warriors. This book examines the Third Crusade, focusing on the KT's and the Saracens. I just picked this up at Barnes and Noble today and it appears to delve deeply into many of the same topics as Knight Templar 1120-1312 with a lot of history wrapped around it. Apparently, the military tactics of the KT's and Saracens are closely examined. Again, it is very well-illustrated and looks quite promising.

SK Hodapp informs me that The Rosslyn Hoax, which is yet to be released, is a must-read, particularly if you're interested in the connection (or lack thereof) between the KT's and Freemasonry. Chris seems to think that the systematic debunking of that alleged connection in this book is likely to inspire SK's Jackson and Smith to launch their own crusade. I've got it on my wish list.

As noted above, I'm certain others of you have your own lists. Be good little knights and share with your brethren. Once we get the conferral of the order down pat, I'd like for us to continue to meet regularly (I'm thinking quarterly) and invite speakers, have Templar-related discussions, and hold the occasional Templar feast.
